Ruedi Matter studied history, journalism and philosophy at the University of Zurich and later graduated from the Stanford Executive Program (SEP) at the Stanford Graduate School of Business in Palo Alto (USA). Between 1974 and 1976, Ruedi Matter worked as an editor at the Basel-based "National-Zeitung". From 1976 to 1988, he was a news editor, producer and presenter of the "Tagesschau" main daily news bulletin, as well as the producer and presenter of the "Karussell" magazine programme of Schweizer Fernsehen. From 1988 until 1992 he was a freelance TV journalist for clients including the European Business Channel EBC (Zurich) and WIF business and current affairs television (Cologne). For a year between 1992 and 1993 he was a communications specialist at McKinsey & Company, before joining "CASH TV" in 1993 as its editor-in-chief with presenting duties. Here he remained until the end of 1996, after which he took up the position of chief editor at n-tv news television in Berlin and Cologne from 1997 to 2006. Ruedi Matter was appointed editor-in-chief and head of department for Schweizer Radio DRS news and current affairs in 2006.
