1 January
Raymond Loretan takes office as the new Chairman of SRG. Mr Loretan is 56 and bilingual in French and German. His career has included periods as the Secretary General of the Christian Democratic People's Party of Switzerland, Swiss ambassador to Singapore, and General Consul (with the rank of Ambassador) in New York.

14 January
The SwissAwards are presented for the tenth time at a gala evening in Zurich. Downhill skier Didier Cuche is honoured as "Swiss Person of the Year 2011".

20 January
SRG signs the Pacte de l’audiovisuel 2012–2015. In this agreement with the major film producers' associations, SRG undertakes to promote independent film-making with an annual budget of 22.3 million Swiss francs. It thus remains one of the country's most important co-producers.

19 – 26 January
The Solothurner Filmtage film festival is held in the fourth week of January for the 47th year. SRG has been supporting this event for many years.

31 January
SRG's pilot high-definition TV channel, HD suisse, goes off air on the stroke of midnight on 31 January 2012. At its launch in December 2007, HD suisse was one of the first European free-to-air channels to offer HD programming.

28 February
SRG begins broadcasting six of its seven regular TV channels (all except SF info) in stunning high definition in parallel with the standard definition service. At the same time it also introduces a new system of volume regulation for TV sound. 

28 February
Radio Télévision Suisse (RTS) launches its rts.ch web platform and revamps its corporate image. TSR and RSR are replaced by the RTS brand, and the change is reflected in the TV channel names: "RTS Un" and "RTS Deux". The radio station names remain unchanged, but are linked to the RTS logo. 

15 March
SRG sells its property at Giacomettistrasse 1 in Bern to Swiss Mobiliar Life Insurance Company Ltd., but remains the building's long-term tenant.

17 March
The "Quartz 2012" Swiss film prize is awarded in nine different categories to Swiss film-makers. For the fourth time, the presentations are made as part of a gala evening at Lucerne's KKL centre, organized by SRG.

20 – 27 April
The 18th "Visions du Réel" film festival takes place in Nyon. SRG has been supporting this celebration of documentary film-making for many years.

24 April
SRG moves early to secure the exclusive television, radio and online broadcast rights in Switzerland for the football World Cups in Russia in 2018 and in Qatar in 2022.

3 May
After five years, SRG is back in the black. In 2011 the Enterprise generated a surplus of 25.75 million Swiss francs, on turnover of just over 1.6 billion francs.

18 – 20 May
SRG supports the Solothurner Literaturtage literature festival for the fifth time as its media partner.

23 May
The 57th final of the Eurovision Song Contest is held in Baku – yet without the Swiss entry: "Sinplus", the winners of the national decider show, are eliminated at the semi-final stage. Switzerland is a founding member of the "Concours Eurovision de la Chanson", as the programme was then known.

29 May
For business reasons, Ringier ceases the production of its own programmes for Presse TV AG.

13 June
SRG Director General Roger de Weck and representatives of seven advocacy groups for the visually and hearing impaired sign the service agreement which will run from 2012 to 2017. The changes promise a significant improvement in services for the visually and hearing impaired.

19 June
The "CINEMAsuisse" television series honours ten Swiss film-makers whose particular talent has shaped domestic cinema. The programmes are aired on SRF, RTS, RSI and RTR. 

8 June – 1 July
SRG provides extensive radio and television coverage of UEFA EURO 2012™ in Poland and the Ukraine, even though the Swiss team did not qualify for the event. Reporting includes live broadcasts, interesting guests, lively discussions, comprehensive match coverage, and the latest team information.

10 July
SRG and the Swiss Ice Hockey Federation (SIHF) extend their contractual partnership for a further five seasons, up to 2016/17. For the first time, the agreement ensures that SRG stations may provide live coverage of one game in each playoff round.

27 July to 12 August
SRG provides up to twelve hours a day of coverage of the Olympic Summer Games in London on its radio and television stations, in addition to the features on all its other outlets. In addition to highlights of the sporting action, comprehensive Olympics coverage focuses in particular on important qualification rounds and deciders involving Swiss athletes.

31 July
DAB+ digital radio (Digital Audio Broadcasting) is proving extraordinarily popular in Switzerland – with July seeing the sale of the one millionth digital radio. This takes the audience to some 2.4 million, or just under a third of all Swiss households.

1 – 11 August
In the course of its 65-year history, the Festival del Film Locarno has become a fixture on the major international film festival circuit. Each August, it hosts over 160,000 film fans, 3,000 individuals from the industry, and 900 representatives of the media. SRG is involved in the festival as part of a wide-ranging partnership.

23 August
Top-flight speakers present their visions of the Swiss radio industry of the future, and sketch out scenarios for how it might develop. The "Radio of the Year 2012" prize goes to Zurich-based Radio 105 in German-speaking Switzerland, and to World Radio Switzerland (WRS) in French and Italian-speaking Switzerland.

29 August
SRG and Weltklasse Zürich extend their contract for production and radio, TV and internet media rights to the Weltklasse Zürich/Diamond League athletics meeting through into 2016.

14 September
The Federal Council upholds the ban on advertising on SRG's websites, although the Enterprise is given greater scope for its online content.

17 September
SRG and the Union of European Football Associations, UEFA, agree to extend the broadcast of UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League matches on SRF, RTS, RSI and RTR (TV, radio and online/mobile) up to 2014/2015.

22 September
After seven rounds of negotiation, SRG and the Swiss media union SSM agree on a new collective employment agreement for 2013. The new Agreement applies for four years, beginning on 1 January 2013.

4 October
Chasper Stupan, Director of Radiotelevisiun Svizra Rumantscha (RTR) between 1984 and 2001, dies at the age of 71.  Under his leadership, RTR established the first FM transmitter chain for Radio Rumantsch (RR), expanded radio programming from two-and-a-half to 13 hours daily, and digitised radio production.

15 October
SRG revises its corporate strategy, integrating the programming strategy into the corporate strategy for the first time. In addition to its business objectives, SRG also sets out areas of focus for the future development of SRG radio, television and internet services.

2 – 8 November
Cinema, television, mobile phone or internet: the 18th Tous Ecrans film festival is a celebration of multiplicity and moving pictures. The festival features over 80 films produced in every possible way. SRG has supported the festival for many years.

6 – 11 November
The International Short Film Festival Winterthur, which SRG has supported for many years, is held for the 16th time this year. With around 15,000 visitors, Winterthurer Kurzfilmtage has become the most important Swiss film festival of its kind.

28 November
SRG and HC Davos (HCD) ice hockey club extend their Spengler Cup partnership by five years, to 2016. The agreement secures the TV production of all matches in HD for the SRG TV channels SRF, RTS and RSI, as well as the global signal.

15 December
SRF joins forces with RTS and RSI to pick the Swiss entry for the 2013 Eurovision Song Contest in Sweden. In a TV vote, the Swiss audience chooses the Salvation Army with their song "You and me".

16 December
Following on from the merger of its content and structures, Schweizer Radio und Fernsehen (SRF) implements media convergence at the formal level. Beginning on 16 December 2012, the entire online offering appears under the distinctive SRF umbrella. The revamped srf.ch website goes online as part of this transformation.

16 December
Nicola Spirig and Roger Federer are the big winners at the Credit Suisse Sports Awards 2012. Ever since 1997 Credit Suisse, along with the Swiss sports journalists' association and SRG, has organized a gala evening, broadcast live, which has become the country's most important sporting social event.

17 – 22 December
In partnership with the Swiss Solidarity charity, Schweizer Radio und Fernsehen (SRF) holds the fourth "Jeder Rappen zählt" ("Every Penny Counts") charity campaign. "Water: Every Drop Counts" is the theme of the campaign. RTS radio stations Option Musique and La Première get involved with a fund-raising day on 19 December.
