Raymond Loretan graduated in law from the University of Freiburg in 1981. Between 1984 and 1987 he worked as diplomatic secretary to State Secretary Edouard Brunner at the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs, before serving as personal advisor to Federal Councillor Arnold Koller at the Federal Department of the Military and at the Federal Department of Justice and Police from 1987 to 1990. In 1991 and 1992 he was the European Delegate of Canton Valais, before being appointed Secretary General of the Christian Democratic People's Party of Switzerland in 1993 – a position he held until 1997. Raymond Loretan represented Switzerland as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary in the Republic of Singapore and in Brunei Durassalam between 1997 and 2002, and served as Swiss General Consul, with the rank of Ambassador, in New York from 2002 to 2007. In 2007, he left public service and, with two partners, set up the "Fasel Balet Loretan Associés" consulting firm in Geneva.
