Hans Lauri is a doctor of laws and a practising lawyer. Following periods as Section Head and Deputy Director of the Federal Finance Administration (FFA), he headed up the Federal Customs Administration (FCA) as its director from 1986 to 1994. He then served as a member of the Governing Council of Canton Bern and its Finance Director until 2001. He represented the canton on the Council of States between 2001 and 2007. Hans Lauri now works as an independent consultant.
